Classic storage architectures are commonly used with flash memory products, yet these architectures were designed decades ago for disks so they introduce compromises and limitations when used with flash. Internal PCI and external DAS architectures are not fully compatible with essential VMware features so they restrict virtualization. SAN and NAS architectures rely on storage controllers and software so they restrict flash performance.

Disk-based architectures compromise flash memory:

  • Internal PCI Flash restricts virtualization by blocking vMotion and other essential VMware high availability features.
  • External DAS Flash restricts virtualization by eliminating Storage vMotion and other essential VMware fault tolerance features.
