Networked Performance Flash Architecture

Who created Networked Performance Flash?

Astute Networks created Networked Performance Flash and introduced the new architecture as part of the ViSX G3 solutions during the summer of 2011.

What is Networked Performance Flash?

The innovative Networked Performance Flash was the first performance-optimized architecture developed during the era of cloud computing, server and desktop virtualization. A key difference of the Astute Networks approach is that it is totally complementary to existing VMware virtualized infrastructure and provides complete 100% investment protection of server, network and storage assets. Unlike classic storage architectures designed decades prior, Networked Performance Flash is unique in three important ways:

  • Accelerates cloud computing, server and desktop virtualization deployments.
  • Delivers performance-optimized data stores using flash memory only.
  • Complements, rather than replaces, existing storage infrastructure.
When should Networked Performance Flash be used?

Networked Performance Flash should be used whenever physical servers have been transformed into virtual servers using hypervisor software such as VMware. Otherwise, virtualization will be restricted by flash memory products utilizing disk-based storage architectures or slow data stores on shared disk-based storage.

Where does Networked Performance Flash fit within an IT infrastructure?

Networked Performance Flash complements current and future virtualized storage, whether it is storage area network (SAN) or network attached storage (NAS), or direct attached storage (DAS). Essentially, Networked Performance Flash is a new class of performance-optimized storage based on flash memory that works in parallel with capacity-optimized SAN, NAS, DAS and other virtualized storage.

Why is Networked Performance Flash needed?

Networked Performance Flash is needed to avoid the over-provisioning of virtualized storage capacity in an attempt to increase disk-based performance. Otherwise, hundreds of disks could be needed to meet the performance needs of the most demanding virtual machines.

Why is Networked Performance Flash better?

Classic storage architectures compromise flash alternatives, with internal PCI or external DAS architectures restricting virtualization and SAN or NAS architectures restricting performance. These architectures were originally designed for disk storage and substantially increase the total cost of ownership (TCO) of flash-based virtualized storage. What is needs is a new approach that delivers superior performance without compromising virtualization and lowers TCO. Astute Networks calls this Networked Performance Flash.

How does Networked Performance Flash complement existing virtualized storage?

Networked Performance Flash is specifically designed to work with current and future virtualized storage rather than replace it. Unlike classic storage area network (SAN) or network attached storage (NAS) products, Networked Performance Flash complements existing virtualized storage in three ways:

  • Works with current data protection, infrastructure management and other applications.
  • Holds demanding virtual machines to prevent storage-related performance bottlenecks.
  • Offloads workloads from sluggish virtualized storage to speed-up additional virtual machines.
