ViSX G3 Solutions

What are the key benefits of ViSX G3 solutions?

Moving virtual machines to data stores on ViSX G3 solutions provides the following benefits to virtualized infrastructures:

  • SAP, Oracle, SQL and other business-critical databases get the performance necessary to run on virtual machines.
  • Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and other applications meet service levels agreement (SLA) commitments.
  • Backup and recovery times for virtualized data stores improve, become predictable and meet expectations.
  • Server consolidation initiatives improve through increasing virtual machines per host server ratios.
  • Virtualized desktop deployments resume, improving user experiences and decreasing trouble tickets.
Who created ViSX G3 solutions?

Astute Networks developed ViSX G3 solutions to accelerate cloud computing, server virtualization and desktop virtualization and introduced them during the summer of 2011.

What is a ViSX G3 solution?

Astute Networks ViSX G3 solutions for VMware-based cloud computing, server virtualization and desktop virtualization deliver performance-optimized flash memory to virtual machines without compromising VMware functionality—a significant improvement over other flash memory alternatives. With ViSX G3 solutions, there is no additional hardware, software, or drivers needed. Each provides performance equivalent to hundreds of enterprise disks, yet ViSX G3 solutions have lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

When should ViSX G3 solutions be used?

ViSX G3 solutions should be used as part of every cloud computing, server virtualization and desktop virtualization environment. Adding just one ViSX G3 solution will accelerate demanding virtual machines, improve backup and recovery times, and increase virtualized database and application performance.

Where do ViSX G3 solutions fit within an IT infrastructure?

ViSX G3 solutions install and configure in minutes and include everything needed to support 64 host servers and their virtual machines, including extended warranty, professional support and on-site service. They connect with standard 1/10G Ethernet and use iSCSI protocol for maximum convenience and effortless interoperability.

Why are ViSX G3 solutions needed?

VMware virtual machines run diverse applications and databases so they need disk-based data stores for optimum capacity and flash-based data stores for optimum performance. ViSX G3 solutions are ideal for provisioning performance-optimized flash data stores to hold demanding virtual machines without having to over-provision disk capacity. Otherwise, increasing performance to match a single ViSX G3 solution requires expensive storage system upgrades plus the addition of hundreds of disks.

How do ViSX G3 solutions improve virtualization?

The Astute Networks ViSX G3 solutions lower total cost of ownership (TCO) by delivering performance equivalent to hundreds of virtualized storage disks using three units of rack space (3U) and less than 300 watts of power. By delivering performance-optimized flash to virtual machines, ViSX G3 solutions ideally complement current and future virtualized disk storage.

How do ViSX G3 solutions improve performance?

Astute Networks ViSX G3 solutions resolve virtualization performance issues by offloading the most demanding virtual machines from current virtualized disk-based storage. This improves performance by delivering a faster data store for key virtual machines moved to ViSX G3 solutions and reducing heavy workloads on disk-based storage.

How fast are the ViSX G3 solutions?

The Astute Networks Networked Performance Flash architecture and patented DataPump Engine technology enable each ViSX G3 solution to add 80,000 sustained random IOPS performance to an existing virtualized infrastructure. That is the performance equivalent of eight-hundred (800) enterprise-class 15,000 RPM disks configured as RAID level 10 for best performance.

How do you scale ViSX G3 solutions?

Add ViSX G3 solutions as needed to support growing virtualized environments. Each one expands performance and adds room to hold additional virtual machines. With VMware vSphere 5, individual ViSX G3 solutions become members of a vSphere Storage DRS datastore cluster and appear as a consolidated virtual resource using the VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS).

How do ViSX G3 solutions preserve past storage investments?

As the first Networked Performance Flash alternatives, ViSX G3 solutions leave virtual machine capacity requirements to virtualized disk storage and address virtual machine performance requirements using performance-optimized virtualized flash. This complementary approach optimizes virtual machine performance and preserves past investments in virtualized storage infrastructure.

How does ViSX G3 solution total cost of ownership (TCO) compare?

ViSX G3 solutions deliver superior performance while slashing virtualization total costs of ownership. They lower operating expenses (OPEX) with superior “performance density” of 80,000 IOPS in 3U of space using 300 watts. This is equivalent to 26,000 IOPS per 1U of rack space (40 times better than “enterprise” storage) and 266 IOPS per watt (10 times better than the “greenest” disk). Plus, internal PCI flash, external DAS flash, and SAN or NAS products require greater capital expenditures per virtual machine than ViSX G3 solutions.

How affordable are ViSX G3 solutions?

A ViSX G3 solution costs about the same as a mid-range virtualization host (server, 4-CPUs, 128MB memory, hypervisor licenses, etc.) so it is within reach of any virtualized environment. As the world’s first solution to make the use of flash feasible for all virtual machines, ViSX G3 solutions are an essential part of cloud computing and virtualization infrastructures.

How can ViSX G3 solutions be used for desktop virtualization?

For example, a single ViSX G3 solution can provide performance-optimized flash to 64 virtual machines hosting one virtual desktop each. At a total of 80,000 random IOPS performance per ViSX G3 solution, each virtual desktop gets 1,000+ IOPS performance. That is enough performance for the most demanding virtual desktop environment and users.

How are ViSX G3 solutions managed after installation?

Once installed and configured, ViSX G3 solutions become a part of the VMware virtualized infrastructure and are managed as virtualized storage using VMware products such as vCenter and VMware Ready Certified third-party software. ViSX G3 solutions automate flash life-cycle management and will proactively substitute a flash module using a spare, if needed.

How are ViSX G3 solutions monitored after installation?

ViSX G3 solutions feature a web-based graphical user interface (GUI) and simple command line interface (CLI) to assist with installation and setup. In addition, they connect to existing or preferred monitoring and reporting tools using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), plus include support for advanced management such as Lights-out Management (LOM), Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART).
